View Full Version : How often will the corys breed?

As most of you know, I have a prolific breeding school of corydora aeneus (bronze). How often will they breed? I ask this because they had a spawn...oh, maybe a month and a half ago or so and seem to be doing the dance yet again!

EDIT: ...and yes, a low pressure system did recently move through the area.

Dave mentioned something about a low pressure system moving through earlier, didn't he? I think that might trigger the spawn.

I did. And if you do a cooling (5 or 6 degrees) partial water change with rain water or something similar at the same time as a low pressure system is passing through, they'll breed about 75 percent of the time.

you can bring on spawning by dropping the temp and the increasing it again, works every time and then you can breed them when you want too
hope this helps

Yes, The Cories think it has just rained and spawn =] Goodluck!

Spawn when it 'rains' and after one time they pair for life. Even when the temp doesn't change at all if they have mated before they will likely do it again without encouragement.
Mine spawn every 2-4 weeks and lay about 15-20 eggs each time.
Congrats on the babies!

How many do you have hatch? What do you do with the babies?

Same theory really but when I want my cories to spawn I throw in some colder water to the tank and voila - tank full of eggs.

Cories lay between 25 and 125 eggs. Takes some time to get the hang of it, but you scrape the eggs off glass with a razor blade, and/or cut an collect the eggs on plant leaves by cutting off the leaves.
Put the eggs into a container filled with tank water. Those clear acrylic things they use to acclimate fish are perfect. Take an air stone, wrap it in filter floss; one go-round is right, as you don't want to totally muffle the air stone. Start the air stone where the loose eggs roll around slightly. Some eggs usually fungus; remove those quickly (they are white and easy to see) or you'll loose the whole batch. I use an eye dropper to suck up to remove fungused eggs. Tinting the water with Methylene Blue before adding the eggs will help prevent fungus.
Eggs hatch in two or three days, depending on the temperature (faster warmer, slower cooler). Little cories at the bottom absorbing their eggs sacs for three days. Then you can feed them. Microworms are perfect, ground flake ok, but messy, and you have to keep the bottom of the container scrupulously clean. You feed them at least four times a day, as you want their bellies to look like they swallowed a tiny BB. In a month to six weeks they'll look like miniatures of their parents.

What Dave said is pretty much what I do with mine. I have a separate fry tank though. I never thought to feed microworms, I should try that.

Sorry should have been clearer on that. 15-20 is usually about the number I have hatch. The batches are around 25-35 and out of those some fungus and some die off. They lay more eggs as they get older. Mine have only spawned 3 or 4 times.
I'd say about 50% of mine survive long enough to be sold but that number is always increasing as me and my cories get the hang of things. After the first few days if they are still alive then they should be fine after that.
