Hi
How can we recognize the male or female discus fish?

james007:

There is really no definite way to tell whether you have a male or female until they pair up and go through the breeding process. I have asked many discus owners about this! One local discus breeder gave me the best way to figure out the sex of my discus....

*Again this is not definite, but the best way I have found...

Look at the top fin and the bottom fin. These fins will run along the body all the way to the back fin. Where the top and bottom fins will come to a point near the back fin if it is a male, otherwise it will be rounded, being a female. Once I was told this, it was easy to determine which of mine were male and females. Please let me know if that doesn't make much sense... it is alot easier to show someone than to type it out! thumbs2:

Take Care!!

The images in that link are correct for us. Our discus matches the female diagram and last fall we noticed her laying eggs on quite a few occasions. (sadly, no male in the tank to help the process along though...)
