During my recent visits to the LFS, they seem to stocks a variety of Zebra Danios that are a glowing pink/pale red in color. Is there are chance that these are artificially colored or is there a new strain developed.

I am aware of the regular strain, the albino variety and the Gold Zebra, but glowing pink, thats a whole lot different.

TIA

those that you are referred to are a genetically altered strain that come in a few different colors.
here is a site that provides some info....

there are also a few post around here about them.

yeah thats the one. thanks for the info. Its pretty pricy about 40 INR (1$) for a pair when I remember getting the ordinary variety for 10 INR a pair (25 cents)

I have seen fake glofish, dyed gold zebra danios. The true glofish really look like they are giving off light. The fake ones are just pink.

In the US, there is no way those are glo-fish. They are $5 minimum EACH. Perhaps in India it's very different in order to make the sale or there are people who don't care about the US patent and intellectual property laws. They are just the same as regular Danios but I have found them to be a tad more fragile although it could be the batches I have received.

They do tend to be a little less hardy than wild type zebra danios and even the gold morph.

Wow! I already love Danio's but now I love those even more. I saw a bunch of the real ones Red and Orange at my LFS this weekend, but did not pick them up because they were around 6 or 7 bucks per fish. So i went with the Zebras. The glo danios would be awesome for adding some real, striking clolor! I will definately be getting some of these in the future!

while I get normal zebra danios for about INR 10 a pair, these glowlight ones are pricier at about 40-50 INR...

They cost more to make (genetic engineering is not as cheap as dyes). LFSs have to make their prices based on what they pay.

I know that we got to avoid dyed fish because the are cruel. whats the public sentiment towards the genetically modified fishes?

Genetically modified plants and animals are no different than their wild counterparts except they have an extra gene with a known effect (color, growth rate, pest resistance, pathogen resistance, etc.). They are not sci-fi freaks that will take over the world. The only differences are known and intentional.

Beat me to it! Basically, imho, genetically altered plants / animals are harmless. Of course it depends on the level of genetic alteration, and what it is intended to do. Things like this are basically harmless. Think of cross breeding, its kind of the same thing. You are introducing new gene(s) from one species of another, or even genetically engineered ( man made ) genes into an existing species. It is done in plants / flowers all the time, with very little to no adverse affects.

Injecting dies, etc, things that are not naturally occuring (genes are naturally occuring for the most part, or when they are produced by man, are not toxic chemicals or anything of that nature and can be inserted correctly into the genetic code. Dying fish I cant stand. Its a completely foreign chemical that can potentially be harmful or even fatal to anything. You wouldnt paint a fish would you? You wouldnt ingest glowing dye to make your eyes turn flourescent would you? Same principle.

Some people hate the glofish, and consider them an abomination. I look at it more like a genetic enhancement / advancement. It is not going to adversely affect the organisim. If it did, we wouldnt have been doing it to plants, or even ourselves for a very long time now. Just my .02

I have nine glo fish in my 20 gallon tank. 3 of the red, 3 of the orange, and 3 of the green (much closer to yellow). I love them. They really pop at night under my black lights.
