ive been thinking about upgrading my nano reef from a 10 gallon to a 20 gallon tank, i know bigger is always better but in a reef how much of a difference would 4 inches actually make? Would this be big enough for me to have 3 fish instead of just 2?

I don't know about the fish piece of it, but doubling the water volume is a great idea.

It's a great idea to upgrade. However, in regards to the fish, it depends on the species of fish

That sounds great! I can't imagine a reason NOT to upgrade!

Well, if you're going to upgrade, I'd suggest going to a 30g.

For some reason (I haven't quite fathomed) 30g is the start of enough water to gain stability. I don't think 20g is. And for the slight increase of upgrading from a 20-30g probably well worth it.

We even managed to get my little frag tank to around 27-30g with a little ingenious designing just for that reason...

i would love to go for a 30 but my stand is only built to have up to a 20g so thats as big as i can go, unless theres like a 25g tall or something with the same footprint as a 20

When you upgrade, I am sure we are all anxious to see some pics!

Yeah that would be an awesome idea to upgrade to a 20. You could keep your options open of what to put into the tank.

Also....after the tank is stable and you have a grip on the SW are you going to add some coral to make it a reef tank??

i already got my water stable and have a pretty good hold of the sw thing, the only thing thats stoppin me from getting corals right now is money. Im still savin up for the light but upgrading to a 20 will set me back so i think the lights will end up being a birthday present

is it a 20g high youre getting? if so it will make a good reef since high tanks make the best reefs

yup its gonna be a 20 high, unless i see something else i like that would fit my stand.

i'll probably just get the tank, few more pounds of aragonite, and maybe some more live rock this weekend, i'll use the 10 as a holding tank to cure the new liverock so everything should be set in the new tank by the beginning of next month

30 gallon reefs are awesome, such a huge difference from a 29 also.
I personally like my 10 and I am just jamming it as full as I can. It is starting to look good.

unexpected edition???

i thought there was a thread about it but i guess got lost somehow when the site was down. The unexpected edition is a coral beauty angel. The saltwater tank at my school got really bad and my teacher didnt have enough time to take care of it properly so we took it down tuesday. We assumed everything was dead. Sadly the tang and cardinal fish were but to our surprise we found the coral beauty angel alive. He didnt anywhere to put it so i was pretty much the only option (im probably the only one in my school with a sw tank). A 10 isnt big enough but neither is a 20 but it's a little better. Eventually the angel is gonna go in my 40g when its set up.
