View Full Version : suggested lighting for 40gal

i got my 40gal R. up.. and the weirdo at the fish store told me a 20watt was enough... :/ I'm not soo convinced....

its a single bulb whats the proper light I would need. 20watts just doesn't seem.... right.. :confused:

Well for that matter he could have told you that 5 watts is fine. For the fish, that is. Not for the plants. I just ordered a twin fluorescent strip light that will give me 80 watts over my 40 gallon long tank. Consensus is that it should be good for a low-light setup. Here's what I ordered, just last night:

I chose this one instead of the slightly less expensive Perfecto model because the All Glass version has a polished reflector vs. a white painted one. More efficient light reflection.

No,20watts wont be enough.Alot depends on what type of plants you get.

I would go at least 60 watts, 80 watts better if you want to keep more plants.

awesome. thanks... thats what I thought... and than he told me 20watts and bam... i was confused again!
I should have known ya all are smarter than the dude running the fish store.
