I don't know much about Oscars either, I only have 1 and I got him(or her) for Christmas, he's been clearing the gravel out of this one spot in the tank the last week or so too! End up with a big hole in the gravel! Everytime I put it all back in, it's back like it again in no time. All the stuff I've read on them (which i tried to do a heap of research!) says that they shovel the gravel around to dig a pit for eggs, as they won't lay them on a rough surface, they like a smooth one, so they dig to get the bottom of the tank, ( you can also put a piece of slate or something else smooth in the tank and they'll use that) just didn't know if they did it when they haven't got a mate!
Good Luck!:22:

either that, or its just oscars having fun with gravel! They like to redecorate a lot.
I Haven't bred Oscars yet, (i'm currently trying). All the research I've studied says they won't breed before their at least 6 inches long and then not very sucessfully. If you do have a pair they'll defend their hole in the gravel viciously. It would be a good idea to put a smooth rock or piece of slate in the tank, for them to use instead of the bottom of the tank. All other chiclids i've bred really have distrupted things with their territorialisim, they'll clean prospective spawing sites, lock jaws, diplay to each other. Just keep an eye on them. Whatever happens hope it all goes well.

If you want them to breed put a flat peice of slate or marble in thier. They will keep it clean and lay thier eggs on it.

If they are a pair, they will swim together most of the time and they will defend their hole. near the spawning time ( some days before that ) male one starts doing aggressive behaviors toward female, no hurt but it seems hes angry and attacking the female with open mouth, its just a motivation to make female lay eggs sooner.
oscar pairs never do lip locking.
a big enough piece of slate is highly recommended! its better be a flat simple one with no patterns on it. and a different color with gravels to attract them.
male breeding tube is not hard to see. its semi out most of the time when hes mature.
also male activity on digging gravels and defending the area is more than female usually.

Hey, any other tank mates? they should be alone and without any stress. they might eat the eggs if they feel the eggs are in danger. it should be safe inside and outside of the tank. also other tank mates can eat them if they find a way.
another thing, in some cases, in the first attempts they don't know how to do it properly because they are inexperience. ( but mines did it great at the first time )
anyway, what size are them? are you sure the other one is a male? did he act like fertilizing the eggs?
