I have been reading conflicting reports of using carbon in my filter with my discus, I currently have a aquatech 40-60 gallon HOB filter running with a bio-filter. Should I be using the carbon cartidges or not. Also if not using a carbon cartridge what could I use to grab the particles from plant matter and such, as the cartridges have a blue sponge like fiber attached. I am just waiting to buy a Fluval 305 for my discus tank, I just purchased the fluval 405 for the 55 gallon and am very pleased with it.

Do NOT use carbon in a discus tank, or any other tank for that matter. Check out this thread on why: http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/aquariumforum/showthread.php?t=14129

You can cut open the cratridges and remove the carbon and just leave the blue stuff.

I was reading your posts and thought I should share something that was shown to me by member Dave66...

Dick Boyd's Chemi-pure packets. I put three in my filter media, and my water is CRYSTAL CLEAR and the colors on my fish have been amazing! I couldn't be happier with the product. Buyer for life!!!

In the aquatec I run on my 37 gallon I cut along the top of the blue pad, dumped all the carbon out and filled it with pond filter fiber..... also check a petshop that sells emperor products.. emperor makes a refillable carbonless cartridge..... the emperor pads will fit perfect in the aquatec......

I am not sure what all the Chemi-Pure removes, but I would be afraid it may remove some of the good stuff as well as the bad that is lists.
