Help with converting marine tank to freshwater

I've purchased a used 75 gallon tank that was used in a reef application. I want to use it for freshwater, however.

Lots of advice about converting fresh to saltwater, but I haven't found any guidance going the other way.

I also purchased the sump / trickle filter and heater that had been used.

Do I need to replace the bio-balls? Or can they be cleaned?
Will trace amounts of salt left on equipment harm my new setup?

I would let all equipment soak in freshwater and rinse the tank well to try and reduce the trace amounts of salt. Even if they won't hurt your tank unless you are planning to keep species that are sensetive towards salt.

Don't know for sure about the bio balls.
