I want to get some driftwood for some java moss and Java fern to attach to, but I read that it affects the PH of your water..

What to do?

I'm looking at a 55g tank.

I'll be getting T5 lighting, and my substrate 4" deep, 1:1 gravel and Eco complete.

Filtration will be cannister, and I will have an air stone running at night, and will be adding liquid Co2 suppliments..

Any comments, suggestions?

Concerned about the driftwood..

I think driftwood lowers your ph a little but only temporarily and will go bak to normal after a while

Ok, cool..

I read somewhere that presoaking helps, too..

the ph lowering effects of driftwood are very small. It will not be a problem for you.

True, and most driftwood won't even leach tannins, and if they do, the pH effect will not even be noticable.

Ok, that's good news..

Don't think I'll even bother then with any decorations, like little castles that the fish can hide in..

The driftwood should do the job..

Good idea. Those decorations are expensive, plus they dont look natural at all. In a fe months you would be throwing them out.

What type of driftwood is this?

Do I get a bunch of smaller, sinking driftwood pieces, instead?

I dont know what type that driftwood is. I woulget a large piece as the focal point and maybe some small pieces to go near it.

Should I mix and match (that kind, and some sinking driftwood), or have a unified look?

How big of a piece should I get for a 48" long tank, do you think?

Definetly go with a unified look. different pieces togther looks really weird.

It's hard to say, maybe 2 2 feet long pieces or a 3 foot piece. It reallt depends on how the wood looks.
