ok...so i am thinking of maybemaking a few of these and i was wondering.....could i just but the already opened coconuts that my LFS has for the reptiles???? is there anything wrong with them??? they still have the fiber on the outside...well some. and then on the inside all of the white stuff has been peeled off and the milk has been drained.
would this work??? is there anything that i would have to do with it??? or could i just clean it and stick it into the tank???
thanks.

boil it to get some of the tannins out and for sterilization

i would still do the boiling. Its important.
Just boil it over and over, with frequent water changes until the water comes out on the clearer side of things.
I boiled mine 3 times for 20 mins each.

I use them in all my tanks as well... the ones for reptiles are fine... or you can crack some open yourself and make your own :19:
All my Apisto's breed in half coconuts and they look lovely and more natural than all the ceramic caves or flower pots i.m.o... you can also tie moss on them to make them blend in completely in planted tanks

thanks. I am not going to do it right now....but here soon i will go to my LFS and pick some up. I just wanted to get some info about it before i actually did go through with my plan. I want to get the 33g done first which wont be for atleast 2 months since i have to move the tank cause of renovations.
thanks for all of the info everyone :thumb:

Thanks for asking this one. Everytime that I go into Petco or Petsmart I see them and think about getting 2 of them for my tank. I just didn't know if I should do something to them or now. I never look at the price because I didn't know if I even could put them in my tank. I think I will go look at the grocery store and the pet store this weekend and decide which path to take.

Squirt, I would take the time to make one, I've seen the ones your talking about and they don't compare to the DIY ones, not to mention their about 5 bucks more than an actual coconut.

The coconuts are not hard to make as long as you have a few tools available. The basics....nothing fancy. The coconut itself, it was like $2.

I have thought about covering a terra cotta pot in java moss. I think that would look kinda rustic. :)

soak the coconut, pot, etc, spread the moss evenly over the surface, set in a shallow dish or cookie sheet, cover with clear glass bowl and set in by a north facing window, no direct light. Check every 2-3 days to make sure it doesn't dry out, mist if needed, in about 2-3 weeks the moss should have attached and is ready to place in the tank

Would other reptile hides/caves work for fish?

I had my dad cut one open. We left the halves to dry for a couple of days and the flesh turned fluorescent pink! Dad said it was a chemical reaction or something. Once the flesh dries it comes off easily. We've boiled the halves 5 times but the water's still quite brown.

If the finish is non toxic and it is new (not used) it should be ok!
