I am having thoughts of having live plants in my 42gallon, along with a few fakes.

What are some easy-to-care-for, pretty live plants that I can put in their?

Well it all depends on your lighting situation and the substrate..what are you using and what kind of a light do you have over the tank?

But..in my experience..Java Fern is super hardy..but again on the other hand it isnt "pretty" (in my opinion) so its a compromise.

Hygrophila polysperma 'sunset' variety... grows like mad in any condition and in the sunset variety the top leaves turn a pretty pinky/red color the closer they get to the light... get ready to prune this baby down every 2 weeks and you can cover your whole tank in it within months ...

Piccy of mine reaching the top (turning pinkish) I think it is pretty for such a super easy plant.. once it grows too long just snip the stem and replant and away it goes again.... the nice thing with pruning is that the red tips/leaves are lower down now and can give nice depth if you layer it nicely.

I have to agree with this, I have 3, and even I have managed to keep them alive, standard lighting, and nothing special.
