View Full Version : Danios Dying

Not sure what's going on and perhaps my glofish are the victim of prior tank cycling and were the first in the tank for an extra 2 days after I virtually cycled the tank. 1 of the 3 is dead and #2 is now hanging out on the bottom in his little favorite area. He did come out to chase food but now he's back hanging out, the same place where #1 was hanging and eventually lying on the ground. Wondering if I should take him out of the tank and whether there is something that might just affect Danios. I can't tell any disease just symptom, swimming at the bottom in one area, about 3-4 inches in space.
On the bright side, while the glofish were sort of pretty, I was never too enamored of the Frankenstein quality of them and they aren't the most interesting even though they are hyperactive. But hey... I still don't want anyone going bye bye in this tank nor having it spread to the other fish. Anyone see this symptom?

I too have victims from a "virtual tank cycling". Mine however were a male guppy and a pleco. It sucks, and the "symptoms" were the same. I'm pretty sure they were just shocked from all the changes... Who knows...
It sorta worked out "in my best interest" too because I wanted to trade in my pleco for a Royal Farlowella Cat... I'm sorry for your loss, but I'm not really sure theres an answer.

if you made the cycling changes to fast it may effect more sensitive fish negatively. have you tested the ph, nitrate. nitrite and ammonia levels? what other fish do you have in the tank?

I ended up having 0 ammonia, 7 or 7.2 pH, 0 nitrate, and had .25 - .5 nitrite although I ended up doing regular 33% water changes daily to ensure nitrate was no higher than .25 for about 3-4 days. Now it's 0.
Other fish in the tank are 3 False Julii Corydoras, 2 bumblebee gobies, 2 Otocinclus, and the 3 Pink Glofish/Danios. The other fish seem fine although the Cories were maybe a tad lethargic but they seem fine now. The only thing I can think of is that the anacharis seem to be dying and leaves floating but I don't think that would cause the fish to die if the levels in the water are fine. I'll be replacing all of those with fresh anubias from aquariumplants on Tuesday.

the only thing i can think of is that you may have changed the environment to much to fast. some fish adapt to negative water conditions slowly over time and react poorly when to sudden a change, even positively, in their environment is made and 33% water changes are a bit much, 15-20% over a week might have been better. but i would think your gobies would have had the same symptoms as the danios if that was the case.

I agree and thought the same. The gobies may have been affected. I caught them twice hanging out together on the same leaf, lol. Thanks for the input. Not sure what is going on. I don't think I care to replace the glofish/danios, especially at $5 per fish and also with the thought of funding a "patented" technology.
