Just for curiousity, I wanted to identify a male neon, so I went to a local fish store and asked them how to identify and to my surprise they were not able to tell and this happened with all other fish store I went.

Is it so difficult to identify a male neon tetra?

If anyone has any idea please let me know. Also if you have any pics of male & female neon it would be great

It's best to ID the sex when the fish are in a group. The males will be longer in body and slimmer, and the females will be shorter and plump.
I do not have a pic for comparison but if I have time I will do a search and see what I can come up with.

In sexually mature fish, the females are larger, rounder, and fatter. From above, the female appears wider. Sometimes the male neon tetra has a straight stripe while the female has a crooked one (depending on if she is carrying eggs) Female Neons carrying eggs can look HUGE!! I got a fright - they look like little beached wales...

In young Neons it is as good as impossible and even as adults it is notoriously difficult.
