View Full Version : Which Cory Cats Will School Together?

I'm wondering whether a pair of Sterbai will school with 3 Julii Cory cats. I just found out that the Sterbai are armored but I don't think the Julii are which may take them out of the "like" species category. For example, I believe Albinos will school with Bronze cory cats as they are both armored - or maybe there is a better reason. Can anyone provide some insight here?

I have Bronze and Albinos and they do school together, but they also school on their own its about 50-50.

All Corys are armored. They have hard plates on their face, backs and sides, spines in their dorsal and pectoral fins, and little barbs that fold along their cheeks. Just like other "armored catfish" such as Plecos. I used to have an army of Emerald Green Corys in 100g mixed Cichlid tank for years.

It varies from tank to tank and on the character of the cories... my two peppered & spotted stay well clear of each other but do get together to eat. Maybe because they are in greater numbers - 12 of each

I have 1 julii and 4 spotted 2 each of 2 different types that I bought all together as "Spotted Corys" from Petsmart. They all seem to school together off and on. As someone else said, about 50-50.

Interesting - that's really no different than how mine are now and they are all the same species.

What is driving me crazy is that I get completely different answers about this from different sources. Some say they are color blind (half the time I think they are practically blind and rely on their barbells) and they can't really tell the different between colors - but that is usually with regard only to the Albino. Bottom line is I'm told both in the wild and in the aquarium and the different species school together.

Others say they don't tend to school together if they are different species.

Now here is an article in Wikipedia (obviously source may vary) that says something else: Other Corydoras species can be placed in the same aquarium, and despite the strong resemblance many species bear to one another, the species will tend to separate out and only move about among their own kind.

Ugh.... I really like the Sterbai and want to get them but it seems that having 3 Julii already that maybe getting just 1 Julii (instead of 2 Sterbai) and 2 gouramis might be a better move. At least then I know they school together and are more comfortable, lol.
