Holy cow, I used to have a pen pal. It was started through something back in 7th grade, called "The Great American Mail Race". Our whole class did it. Each one of us wrote to a different school class. The one girl I ended up writing back to, we still write today, 12 years later! Penpals are great, allbeit uncommon in this electronic age. It'd be a lot of fun, good luck!

I had a penpal from Australia. She was way cool, she lived 60 miles from Sydney and went diving at the Great Barrier Reef once a month+ (ish). So jealous.
