You can see the fish I have/going to get in my sig. There seems to be room for another school- if I can it will be neon tetras. It just looks a little empty. The rasboras stay in top front, the swordtails stay in middle-bottom, the cories are obviously on the bottom, and the pleco, well, hes on the glass. And the gourami will be everywhere I suspect, but there is only one. The whole top and a little of the middle is pretty much like a ghost town. Can I get a school of 8 neons?

I think you could probably do it.
Just keep up on your water changes and make sure you have some floating plants for the gourami. Neons like them too.

Okay. But why do I need floating plants? I understand protection, but I will have a lot of plants anyway.

Provided the right filtration, yes. Keep up on the water changes though. You dont need floating plants. I keep mine without them and they do fine.

I have a penguin 150 and an aquaclear 50. I do weekly 30-40% water changes. Is that good?

yeah, you should be okay. Be very careful not to overfeed.
Yeah, I agree with Ed. It should be ok to add a small school of tetras. Good luck!

if you want something that goes near the top and middle i wouldn't get neons.....because from my experience...my glowlights (pretty well the same as neons) stay at the bottom-middle of the tank.
Thats just my $0.02 but....i just thought i would let you know that.....some other peoples neons and glowlights might not stay at the bottom...but mine do. lol.

Sorry for not answering fast enough.
My neons ssorta go everywhere.
The reason I have floating plants is because they have a lot of that in their natural environment. It is for shelter and it makes them feel more at home. Also with the floating plants they may be more comfortable with going to the top of the tank and less likely to hang out at the bottom.
While they aren't a neccesity they are still a good idea to get. You could keep them without it no problem though if you wanted to.

Freshwaterfishies, I will try it without the floaters, and if they stay near the bottom, I will get some floaters.
Squirt, as long as they sometimes go to the top, I am fine. I have had glowlights and they stayed near the top.

you could always get more harlequin rasboras - with more they might school and move around more

I would like more types though- I have 8 rasboras anyway and I like the way they school now and I don't really want any more. I got a 3 spot gourami and 4 neon tetras BTW. I will get 4 more tetras though.

I have had glowlights and they stayed near the top.
hhmm...must just be different personalities or something....mine are always on the bottom or near the middle.

Mine were mostly in the middle, but 1/3 of the time they stayed near the outflow of the filter.
