I have been keeping Apisto's and Dwarfs for more than 10 years but this really is a first!!!

My Apistogramma Cacatouides male & Apistogramma Macmasteri female have fallen in love - completely baffling that they are ignoring their own partners.

I managed to catch the 'lovers' on film as otherwise I get loads of 'impossible..... your lying' comments

The film does show how they would also display for each other if they were the same type of Apisto so maybe interesting to other dwarf cichlid fans. She has picked a little cave to spawn in and is trying to get him there...

Note also how the poor Pimpelodus Catfish get a good few bashings (this is also normal behaviour which can worsen once there are eggs and the Pimpelodus are twice the size)

The film was taken last night - since this morning there are eggs - I am stumped as to if they will come out and if they do what they will have produced together - unfortunately the young will probably be sterile or extremely ugly or maybe even deformed - time will tell - regardless I will take care of them

Cheating fish! How could they?? Will their mates take them back when they're done with their fling?? Only time will tell.... Jess you have a whole soap opera going on before you're eyes! I can't wait to hear what happens to the children in the next episode. LOL! Keep us updated! That is just amazing video.

P.S. The more I learn about cichlids the more fascinated I am with them! Me thinks me sees a cichlid tank in my future....:ezpi_wink1:

@ Skarloey

Cichlids are the best, always interesting to watch, especialy when they are in love with whoever:hmm3grin2orange:

When my fish folk is busy with spawning, I really dont need my TV.

There are even Cichlids for very small tanks, so you dont need to worry about looking for space to put up a 150 gal. thing.

Yeah not the cleverest catfish swimming right back to where he was ...

And cause my fish are nuts LOL I had a pair of Rams once who were convinced the CO2 bubbles were their eggs and they defended them with their lives <tsk> I always wondered why they never realised when the 'eggs' didn't come out ....

I have also had sparkling gourami's spawn sucessfully in a cave instead of building a bubble nest at the surface <rolls eyes>

You sometimes come across weird things keeping fish for years and years :ezpi_wink1:

Gorgeous fish!

If the babies come out good looking, you DO realize that you are obligated to name them after me, right?

This is a real first and I cannot find any other cases of this happening online only mentionings that in very unusual cases it can happen.

I e-mailed a Apisto specialist (author of apisto books) and he is very excited and recommended to bring the young up to see what happens but then euthanize them as young adults. I understand his points as hybrids and cross breeding should be a no-no.... what he doesn't understand is that there is no way in hell I can euthanize healthy fish just because their parents were naughty LOL

I will have to keep them and make sure non are sold etc.

Now let's see if I can get these little fry big...

Exciting stuff!!!

"Apistogramma drummachinus" hahahaha good name!!!

That is really cute, Jess. Especially "Love is in the Air" playing in the background. :) I see no reason they couldn't have a spawn. I think we get a lot of cross breeds we don't know about. I have two danio's and have no idea of what they are. They are a mutation of something or another.....one having a red tail looking rather similiar to my rasbora's. Who knows? I only know they are ugly. I also have a gold tetra nothing like the others in color. They are a true gold and this one is gray.

You will be one of us awful people who have HYBRIDS! ewwwwww
