I'm planning to change up my 20g long. I have a friend who is adopting my Danios this week so I'll have the room. My question is what aquascape should I provide for the Rams to keep them happy. I don't really have any caves or anything and I've read they like hideouts.
Here's a picture of pretty much what I have in my tank now minus the purple rock in the middle:

Any suggestions? Show me your Ram hideouts. I need ideas.

you can overlap them drift wood and make a cave :)

you could also get a couple pieces of slate to make a cave, my lfs sells all rocks for a 1$/lb

You need plenty of hiding places, and somewhat dim lighting. What type of rams are you keeping?

If it's a coupled pair I wouldn't worry about caves or anything like that with German Rams... they only need some flat rocks to spawn when they decide to have babies and maybe some floating plants to dim the lighting a little. I have kept Rams for years (german) and they have never made any use of caves etc. they are happy to swim around the plants unlike apisto's (other dwarf cichlids) which are cave spawners.

They love sand their name translated is close to the sand eaters - they love to take whole mouthfuls and sift through it but I can see you have some sand for them to sift around in :19:

Take my word with a grain of salt because I don't have any but,I've read that because they are open spawners you dont need caves unless you have more than one female. You need caves if you have more than one female because once the male has mated he will chase any other female around and they need a place to hide.

Good to know! I will find some flat rocks to build something. Oh and since they love sand I think I'll go ahead and change out the rest of the tank to sand before I get them. Right now I only have sand in one corner.
