Which is better to go by when determining how many fish should go in a tank, the actual surface area of the tank or the number of gallons of water in the tank. Our tank happens to be taller then it is wide so there is less surface water.
With most tanks, surface area is what's important...not total volume...
...the high, narrow tanks aren't a good idea...you have more volume, but can't host more fish...
Agreed. Surface area means more gaseous exchange and better oxygenation for the fish.

I have to agree...a longer tank is much better. My 33g long doesn't sound like much water but it's really long giving the fish a much larger area to explore and move around in...making for less conflicts which equals less stress which equals happier fish. Of course that's just my opinion...lol...

Surface area and gas exchange can easily be compensated for with surface agitation and a powerful air pump. Gallons are more important, but the shape is also important. A very tall tank is better for certain types of fish and very bad for others. It is very dependent on the fish being kept too. Their size, shape, and behavior are very important in determining ideal tank.

My 20g long has been a happy home for my small, zippy community fish. My corys LOVE all the floor space to comb through. I don't think I'd ever put an angel in there since its so short though.
