Fronts, as any cichlid will lose color regardless of gender when they aren't kept in a Happy environment
I have Blue Zaires and the Alpha Male sometimes looks ashy, like he just "got outta bed" when I turn the lights on in their tank in the "wee" hours to feed them.
Otherwise I never turn the lights on in their tank. Natual lighting is the key as they are deep water fish and lights make them skiddish.
Always make sure they have sinking food. as "float" can be a problem.
They are one of the "well loved" fish that lfs sell without informing the buyer. Lake Tangs should be with Lake Tangs, as af with af, sa with sa, etc.
"Fish fever" (buying what we like without research) leads to unhappy fish and irresponsible keepers.
