View Full Version : Bristlenose plecos

Hello everyone. I might be getting some new tanks later this year or sometime next year. I am interested in bristlenose plecos. Would one each of super red, calico, albino, brown, and green dragon plecos be compatible with each other? If so what size tank would you recommend to house them? And/or their breeding requirements?

Thank you.

Those are all (most are selectively bred) variants of the brown bristlenose. Males are territorial, so the tank size required would depend on the sexes of your stock. They don't typically claim a large territory, but I wouldn't recommend more than 2 males in less than a 36-48" wide tank. Breeding is simple, just provide suitable size caves of some sort, feed them a good diet, and they'll spawn when they're ready. Housing 5 adults wouldn't be a problem, but only the dominant male will be getting any spawning action from the females.

They reach sexual maturity in about 8 months, and females will lay 40-100 eggs, depending on her size. Baby bristles are easy prey for other fish, they don't have the spines like the adults do when they're small. Left on their own in a tank with other fish a few fry usually manage to survive. If nothing eats the fry you'll become overrun with them rather quickly, particularly with multiple females spawning.
