Are Tiger Barbs as hardy as Zebra Danios when it comes to using them as starter fish?

Yes, but you'll need to keep them in a group of at least 8 or they'll harass any new arrival to death.
Zebras on the other hand, don't bother anyone too large to eat. Keep at least six if you go that way as they live better (longer) in groups.

Are we talking "starter fish" as in beginner's fish or fish with which to cycle?
If beginner's fish, I'll echo Dave.
If to cycle, please consider a fishless cycle!

To late for a "fishless" cycle. We have had our tank up and running for a little over two weeks. It's 84 gallon and we have 5 zebra danios which we bought in the first week and 5 Tiger Barbs we got two days ago. I thought I had read somewhere that Tiger Barbs make good starter fish to cycle the tank.

to cycle a tank that size you should get about 10 more danios

Also, danios tolerate colder temperatures and are more peaceful.

I agree
I always use danios to cycle tanks. They never bother anything and are very happy energetic fish.
Danios are also good fish when the tank is done cycling.
I love the long-finned danios especially. I think they add alot to the tank:c3:

I've used Tiger Barbs in the past to cycle a tank...usually because my local PetSmart has them on sale for "5 for $3". They're pretty hardy and if they do croak then it's only $3 down the toilet or buried in a shallow grave in the back yard.

I don't ever support cycling with fish BUT if there is no turning back, danios are probably your best bet.
