I got a mate for my female GT. he is a cutie one!
i thought he is as big as my female but when i brought him home i found out he has almost the same long but half wide! :D
guess my female is at least 6 months older.
some pics of him.
ps: last pic, have you ever seen such a triple kiss? :hmm3grin2orange:

Very nice but isn't that the 40g you have divided in half? And if so I would get that BP out before they spawn or it is going to be tore up.

Ocellatus

thanks.
yeah thats the 40g but its not divided anymore! i removed that big knife fish and put out dividers. now the whole tank belongs to 2 GTs and 2 female BPs. GTs are about 4.5" and BPs 3.5" and 4"
seems they can find their own space over there.
they are not fast growing fish. also my BPs are almost stunned at that size due to i don't know what reason! in the past 10 months they have grown just about 1". guess genetic problem as i've heard some similar cases. i'm sure its not for small tank issue.

about spawning your right. 3 of them are in spawning mood! and get more aggressive but i'll try to keep the peace over there :wink2:

They arent kissing, more like fighting.

Ocellatus

you should see him after a while feeding by my mix ( contain carrot, spinach, lettuce, ... ) when he gets his phosphoric green color! and red fins edge!
male GTs are awesome when they get big. specially one like him with bright body and those great patterns on the fin and tail.

Do you blanch the veggies to soften them up and then grind them or grind them fresh? Also, do you freeze it in ice cube trays with clear gelatin? I want to make up a batch of the goodies. I know some use fish or shrimp in place of beef heart. Your thoughts?

Ocellatus
12-03-2007, 03:12 PM
well lady you know i'm not familiar with kitchen words in english!!
i put those vegetables in boiling water for a few minutes so they get soft. then grind them with beaf heart. put them in the plastic bags and flatten them, then put in the freezer. each time i break a piece and feed the fish.
i don't use gelatin because i don't feel a need to bind the ingredients. i use the mix instantly when its frozen. if you wait more than 1-2 minutes it melts and there will be a mess if you throw it in the tank!

some days ago i went for a more nutritious mix! i added gelatin, 5 garlic grains, a cup of crushed fish food and 200 grams of shrimp to the mix but my oscars spit it to my face!! :D i think they didn't like garlic smell.

and i don't have an idea about replacing beef heart with another thing.
each time i make it i try to reduce the amount of beef heart and add more vegs and other useful things. i have to do it gradually because my oscars are picky and won't accept a sudden change in the mix. but my other fish such as BP, GT, knife fish don't care what they eat!

well hes got some color in these 10 days. fin and tail edges are orange now.
here are some new pics.
tail and fins are a bit torn because theres a small convict in the tank and she bites him sometimes! i'll bring her back to the LFS tomorrow or the day after it.

It doesn't take much for fry, right? I've seen 10gal aquariums at Pet Supplies Plus for something like $20...

Ocellatus
01-15-2008, 09:13 PM
well i can get a 10g for 4$ here! http://qsmile.com/qsimages/39.gif
and a sponge filter for 3$ and a heater for 4$. but its still too much for me :hmm3grin2orange:

thank you arkie, yeah i'm excited but not that much! lol

unfortunately i don't have much time and money now to spend on them. just should wait another month for a damn hard exam and then i'm free to get some tanks and spent all the time with fishies. :ezpi_wink1:

Ocellatus

Thanks kitten.

well today morning i saw they have spawned but there was just a small amount of eggs and in half a day they ate all the rest! i think they were scared by presence of other fish in the tank.
but no problem, they will learn little by little!

EDIT: today morning not tomorrow morning! http://qsmile.com/qsimages/39.gif

4 months later! http://qsmile.com/qsimages/39.gif

some new pics. they spawn almost every month and eggs get eaten by pleco, BPs and themselves! its near spawning again. they did a long and deep lip lock!
the funny thing is the male like to decorate their nest with seashells, probabely to attract the female! http://qsmile.com/qsimages/281.gif

some months later!

Its 3 or 4 months that I have removed all other fish in the tank so the GTs can spawn comfortably but the female still not gonna do it!

worse than that, they recently got an internal disease ( Hexamita I believed ), they didn't eat anything for a whole month. I tried treatments that I knew of, the males healed up a few days ago but the female still has the sign of disease ( white feces stuck to the fish, staying in the shadows and not eating ) shes doing better recently I hope shes healing up too.

End of the thread, after just 1 year, cutie died today and I'm so pissed off :((

they got an internal disease, I said he healed up but a few days later the sign of disease came back. I tried various treatments but no result. 3 days ago he started breathing heavily and swimming strangely. 1 day later he had unbalanced swimming sometimes upside down. it seemed the infection got through his swim bladder. today he was not able to swim at all, sinking on the bottom upside down. I was thinking about euthanasia but before I do something he died himself ...
that was the worst thing happened to me since I started fish keeping ( just 2 years ). he was a great looking one with lots of personality. too bad he lived so short.

today the female started showing same signs that male showed up before dying, unbalanced and unable to swim. didn't have clove oil in hand sadly I put her in a bucket and added ice cubes. just watched her passing away slowly ... had not been crying like that for years. she was with me since the first day of fishkeeping.
