so ive read that the cycling process is the same in SW tanks as it is in FW tanks, is this true? if it is could i seed a newly setup SW tank with filter media from my FW tank?

That would be the idea if you were setting up a "fish only" tank. If you are going to use Live Rock as your filter, you will want to let the Live Rock cycle without any fish in the tank.

How quickly the Live Rock cycles will depend on how much decaying matter is on the rock when you receive it. That is what people are talking about with the cured vs. uncured Live Rock. Some fully cured rock can be fish ready in a couple of days. Uncured rock could require up to a month to cycle.

When you use live rock, you don't need to seed the tank at all. If you wanted to speed up your live rock curing process, I guess you could add some "seeded" media to your ac30, but I honestly don't think it is necessary.

BTW, what were you going to put in the AC30?

The carbon inserts are a good idea. You can also use the sponge, but keep in mind that the sponge will be working purely as a mechanical filter, so you will need to clean in very well and very regularly.

I use a small sponge and floss in my cube, and I actually rinse my sponge in hot tap water about twice a week. After it is clean, I dry it off and put it back in the cube with some fresh floss.

My point is, that if you have enough live rock, you do not need to maintain any beneficial bacteria in your AC. You just need to keep the media in the AC as "detritus free" as possible.

thats good to know thx, but you mentioned that it depends how much decaying matter there is on the rock, since there is decaying matter, does that mean i dont need another source for ammonia?

Exactly!!!!

In some ways, the SW cyling process is much easier that FW.
