What's everybody's opinions on this for a Rainbow fish tank? It's a 55 gallon tank with 2 sponge filters and a HOB for a total of nearly 200 gallons of filtration.

I originally wanted to do Discus but I changed my mind.

I hope my story didn't affect your decision!! :( I'm terribly sorry. I didn't mean to cause any hesitation with you choosing Discus. Gosh I feel bad...

Well, the thought of dropping a few hundred bucks on fish that would croak if water parameters aren't right kind of did it for me

Have you checked on the water parameters required to keep rainbow?

Nope because they don't really "scare" me like Discus do

Indeed, they are expensive. I guess that's one of the risks we all take owning Discus. The best we can do is get healthy fish to begin with, quarantine, and make sure water is in tip top shape. Then hope for the best.

Maybe down the road you'll get some Discus. Again, I apologize. Didn't mean to put a sour taste in your mouth :(

Discus can go in my 75 gallon, when I get it

I love discus...looking at them. I know I cannot handle the care it takes to keep them healthy-so I enjoy everyone else's discus.

Good choice on the Rainbows, not near as demanding as Discus. I've only been lucky enough to have kept 4 species but I've done a lot of research on them ;-)

Only think to watch for with them is if your waters too soft.

And that's why I need a GH/KH test kit.

A semi-local pet store has a decent selection of Rainbows but The Wet Spot, out on the west coast, has an insane selection of Rainbows

Did you go to That Pet Place in lancaster?

Check your water quality report for your area if you are on city tap water.

Yes....That Pet Place in Lancaster. I could go there once a week. I love that place.
Fortunately, I'm on well water

Be sure to get yourself a TDS meter if you haven't already.
