Hello everyone. I've just registered here at AC as I know forums are a huge source of information. I live in State College, PA and recently got a 10 gallon freshwater aquarium. I've been trying to sort it out for a few weeks and I have about 10 fish in there now.

I am very much into motorcycles as well and I even run my own Sportbike forum. I spend a lot of time on forums and my girlfriend is somewhat angry that I found another one to join...oh well the aquarium was her idea! :ezpi_wink1:

Welcom fellow PA'er. 10 seems a bit much for a 10 gal, but water changes and good care will be good. What do you have in there? Plants/Fish/Invertabrates/etc

3 Zebra danios
1 Upside Down Catfish
1 Blue Gourami
1 African Frog
1 red tetra
1 swordtail
2 ?? Tetras
1 ? shark

Edit: 2 snails, a bamboo, and 1 other live plant.

The last couple my girlfriend purchased over the weekend. She mainly buys the fish, I maintain the aquarium. She calls me the "Pool Boy" :22:

well tetras should be in groups of 4-6+ and that shark will probably out grow a 10g.

what kind of filtration do you have???

We started out with 3 of the red tetras and 2 of them died due to a high Nitrite level. I don't think the tank was quite done cycling. We have already started looking at bigger tanks but haven't decided on any yet.

Filtration is a HOB Whisper I think. I bought the 10 gallon as a package and the more I learn the more I find out that it's probably not that great of a filter. Any reco's?

welcome to ac!

the best filter for a overstocked 10g would be a aquaclear rated for 33g

well it just depends on if it keeps the tank clean....i bought one as a package once and the filter works fine....

Thanks for the replies and advice everyone...

right now the tank is very clear and I've been testing the water daily since I lost a lot of fish. Nitrates and Nitrites are finally in line. Everybody seems happy and healthy!

Here's a picture I took tonight...anyone know why my snails are floating?

some snails will just do that.....like get an air bubble in them and float.....also, some types can flip upside downa nd slide across the surface of the water looking for food.

nice tank thumbs2:

snails will float in my limited experience. If it makes you uncomfortable remove them from your current. I f you have floating plants as I do, they will find one and go bak to business. Provided they are not dead.

If dead, you will see them half hanging out their shell.
