View Full Version : SW tank update! New black perc!
I brought home some new critters. I got a sun coral...they're apparently hard to look after, but we'll give it a try. It's skinny and needs some TLC, so I'll see if I can fatten it up!
I also got a black baby perc! My two died (no idea why) and I'm paranoid now. I'm planning on getting a normal perc as soon as the next shipment gets in. I was lucky to get this fellow though...
My emerald crab also died...not sure why...maybe not enough iodine to aid in moulting...although the blue shrimp is moulting like crazy...so I replaced her with a male and a female. When they grow up they can make plankton if they like...
I also got 5 Nassarius snails to compliement the 5 Orange-spotted...my sandbed needs all the help it can get...
My skinny sun coral...

My black baby perc...he'll darken as he matures...

My brain now has 2 mouths...and looks like it's splitting...but I was told that's very unusual...so it's likely nothing...but if you look very close to the right...you can see my prawn goby in his ususal spot!

...and a gratuitous picture of Ling, my rat snake, chowing down today...ate 4 big mice!

NICE corals! do you have any inverts that eat bubble algae? if the pockets explode you will have a infestation of it!
dont feel bad about the clowns dying. 2 weeks after i moved my tank raised clown to my 55g he died. suddenly he got weak and just was laying and gasping, then he died.
and when i bought my brain coral 3 months ago i was told it was ready to split, and it has 2 mouths, but it never has split yet

Nice additions Rue!!!!
Thanks guys! I don't have a recent pic of the SW tank...I'd have to take one...
The algae I think you're referring to is Grape Calupera...Valonia is what's most often called 'bubble algae'...although by mistake the Grape is sometimes called 'bubble' too (so confusing!!! :help: ). The emerald crabs eat a little...but not enough to help...I've been harvesting a LOT of algae...don't mind really...but I can see that it could become a pain...my tank's too small for a foxface...or even a lawnmower blenny...
...and I also now have a very happy snake...sleeping off her big meal...won't see her for a few days...

i know what you mean, my 33g saltwater had alot of it, it just gets to be a mess
my 55g started to get 2 or 3 stalks of it but luckily the yellow tang sees it as tasty treat, and hes my best algae cleaner. the arrow crab is best for hard to reach places, especially cleaning powerheads
and yes, please get a recent pic of the tank! from the last pic the tank looked so awesomely done!

Rue! I can't believe you have a snake. All this time I thought you were a sissy like me. Surprise, surprise.
You have certainly taken leaps and bounds with that saltwater tank. Seems like you just set it up and just l@@k at it. It's lovely and you are doing such a great job.
But the snake......? I dumped my worms out. Couldn't take it......especially when my little firemouth got one caught in his throat and I had to pull him from the tank and pull the worm back out. GAWD. (shudders)
I am a sissy! LOL...but not with animals...
I've had snakes since I rescued the Grade 7 Science Lab garter snake...
But not many...Ling is the 4th I've had...but she's the first larger rat snake...
Here's a pic of my black ocellaris in Bubbles the GBTA!
On Wednesday I also brought home a new ocellaris to be his partner...a regular orange coloured one...and for one night they shared the anemone...but now the black clown is picking on the orange clown...hope they sort it out soon...
I took pics of the orange clown, but they didn't turn out...

You are going to need to spot feed that sun coral several times a week and make sure it isn't really in direct light. Throw it under an arch or something where it is going to have a little shade.
Black perc's are awesome too I wanted one but just went with regular ocellaris.
Yes, the sun coral is under the front overhang...and I'm feeding it a fair bit...trying to fatten it up, as it wasn't looked after the best at the reef store...
I did read that although they live in deeper water and in caves in the wild, they can actually do fine right under the tank lights...provided they are fed well.
However, I think I'll leave mine where it is...it's out all the time and is looking better...

That's awesome...I wish the best of luck to you with it. I am picking up some galaxea, a kenya tree and a frogspawm or hammer coral next weekend. I can't wait.
