I am going ahead and starting a journal for this now. It is still in the planning stages (we want to let our bigger reef mature a little before we jump into another) but so far it will be a 20 gallon long display tank (thanks Sil for the idea) with a 10 gallon sump. Since I already have both of these tanks already.

not sure if I want to go full reef with only a couple of fish or maybe something like a FOWLR with some macroalgae. Not sure yet. I will keep you wonderful people updated.

It will be fun to see what you decide to do with this tank. A 20L can be such a great set up with lots of possibilities.

Will this 20L be instead of the 4 way Betta?

Probably, but I'm not ruling out the betta tank. The sale is still going

Neat build-will be watching too because if I get into SW it will probably be a 20L or the 30 gallon I have-plus I have a 10 gallon just sitting around too. To be honest I don't think I will do anything smaller than a 20L in the future (be it SW or FW)

Run now and get another 20L while the sale is going on. Just trying to help you spend your $ :11:

What are your thoughts on something like this 30G reef setup for a beginner? Coral Life is supposed to be coming out with a new version any day if not already. Cost is $300. I see some pros and cons but looking for feedback.

The biocube is a great nano system, it's basically the same as ours. Same style sump just different lighting and it's smaller. But if you can afford it I would give a thumbs up on it

I think jbj has a 45 gallon all in one system to.

JBJ does also sell a 28G setup for about $100 more. Their other larger tanks seem to be sold separately not in an included set. One of my concerns is that they both come with hoods and the lights are installed inside the hood. I think the lights can be retro upgraded but at a cost. So, are the lights good enough for LPS? Will the evaporated water affect the lights inside the hood? LED lights sold separately can get costly but I know that you get what you pay for.
I love the clean lines of the rimless tanks but I don't have thousands to spend.

The lights on those hoods should do ok for softies and LPS. Do a search on you tube for the biocubes should be some good info

As I'm doing my research for this build I am not even sure I need a sump for this size build. I know it would help with the water quality if I had a sump. Still up in the air about it

You def know more than I do but with a tank that size I think you can get away with a large HOB. I have seen many vids on doing it this way for a nano tank.

Yeah I saw a video where someone used an AC50

A nanno can easily thrive if stocked correctly and water change weekly :)

I'm on the verge of putting together either a 20 long or 30 long as an upgrade for my clowns, and using a 10 gallon tank as a sump. While you don't need a sump on a tank this small, it never hurts. I am mainly doing it so I can use an in-sump skimmer as I can't stand using my CPR bakpak I've used in the past. It was just way too noisey and finicky.

Do you have a journal? I would love to follow along with your build.

I do not yet. Once I've got a tank picked out and I'm ready to gather the equipment, I will start one. Plans are tentatively FOWLR plus a bubble tip anemone for the clowns.
