From what I see, the throat area is pale like a female would have.

Well, take a look at the fin extensions...the reddish throat may not show up well in the picture or it may not show up because there's no female in the tank?

I see what you mean about the fins, but I thought the male's throats were always bright orange, regardless of the presence of a female?

Periodically he gets real colored up and his throat and belly get very red. When he's feeling mellow this is his coloring.
