I really hate buying fake stuff like rocks and stuff. Where can I buy real rock?
I wanted 'nice' real rock for my goldfish tank...so I picked up a couple at Petland...
...lol...I felt really stupid paying for rocks, but I got the look I wanted!

yes, slate and lava rock are real and natural. There are lots of rocks that you can find outside for free that are ok to use. I read that you can drop some vinegar on them & if it doesn't bubble it's safe to use. Clean the rock by baking or boiling it in plain water first though. I'm pretty sure this info is here in this group somewhere.

do you have a stream near you? i have one down the street and i go there and pick rocks. I scrub and boil them and then leave them in a bucket overnight. i test the PH in the bucket the next day and if it's the same i add it to the tank.
The only "Live" Rock in freshwater tanks is when you have more Malaysian Trumpet Snails than gravel sitting at the bottom of your tank.
