If you have standard tank lighting you are limited on what will survive. I would suggest Anubias species. Many different forms and leaf shapes so you can create a nice scape with Anubias alone. Java fern are nice and will survive and again a few different leaf forms for variety. Moss species, floating plants like frogbit or dwarf water lettuce and hardy Crypt wendtii will all make it just fine. You will need root ferts for crypts and liquid ferts for the rest.

What kind of substrate do you have and is there driftwood or rocks in there?

The only thing I caution with floating plants is watch out for the duckweed is once its in-its very hard to get rid off. One is all you need for an almost never ending population. Frogbit is easier as they are much, much bigger than the (pesky) duckweed.

looks like my 10 gallon...it got one of the little buggers and is now a constant soup that I clean off weekly but never can get all of the buggers unless I take hours stressing the fish out while I skim and skim and skim and skim, now the 20L is almost as bad and the 3 betta tanks have it too. We were at Aquarium Adventures Sunday and they wanted $4.50 for a small cup, judging on that I have at least a $100 of it floating around in the two-10g, two 5.5g, and the 20L.

Ugh, duckweed. I'd rather bang my head against the wall than buy that stuff. At least that way the headache would be free.

The worst thing is that my sister got it in her one 5 gallon, and somehow one piece got into the 10 gallon and exploded in population, and then just migrated with maintenance. Now we are fighting with every water change and filter cleaning to get as much of it out, but seems to be a long battle.
