I was researching plants to put in my tank and a thought came to me; has anyone taken Creeping Jenny cuttings (with rhizomes) from outdoor pots and grown it in their tanks? The cold weather is about to hit my area and it will die back the Creeping Jenny in my pots. I took some cuttings to plant inside and wondered if I could rinse/wash some off and use in my tank.

I know that some here do that with pothos ivy, leaves growing from the tops of their tanks, with the roots in the water...some here do that with "lucky bamboo", also

Since they sell a type of Creeping Jenny for aquariums I figured that they would not be toxic to the fish. I took some cuttings about 6-8 inches long (soaked and rinsed) and made a few bunches by winding some fishing line around the base and attaching the bunches to plant weights that I had on hand. The fish are now checking them out and the Lemons are trying to nibble at the little rhizomes. I can easily remove them if they don't do well. I might make a few more bunches and put them in a jar for the kitchen window. If the ones in the tank work out then I will have a few more to add to the tanks. It's an experiment .

The type you have are probably not truly aquatic, and not meant to be totally submersed

I don't see how it can hurt to try, but non-aquatic plants useally don't last long in a tank

You are probably right but I'll keep a close eye on them and if I see any issues arise they will be removed.

Creeping Jenny is Lysimachia nummularia and Aquariumplants.com has it listed for sale as Llyodiella http://www.aquariumplants.com/Lysimachia_nummularia_p/bp115.htm
Time will tell.

Looks good so far...maybe you'll have a crypt to add soon

in the aquarium creeping jenny is the same as Golden Lloydelia, it grows as a stem plant. Little picky, but should survive

I hope so, too! I'll do my best to have it survive (snails too)

I hope it didn't freeze, lol...what's your temps like there today?

Right now it is 44 and sunny. The low this morning was 32 and the high will be 54. Whatever happens I will still plant it and be patient.

Just about the same temps here, too...they'll be fine

I was sold so many non aquatic stem plants that just died in my tank after a week or month that I stopped throwing my money away. That was in my 29 gallon tank, my experience I would not try non aquatic plants in a tank again. I know some have lidless tanks and can grow them out of water-but all of my tanks have lids and though some of the anubias and the Java fern leaves are growing partial out of the tank in the 75 gallon right now-they are still contained under a lid.

Totally off-topic, but every time I read the title of this thread, I think of my dog creeping on the rug, rubbing her belly

But she's spelled "Ginny"

lol, I need to google what a creeping jenny looks like...

Oh its pretty, I would try some and see how well it does since it is something others seem to have grown in their tanks...see post #6 here:

My dog, Chance, does that every morning to tell us it is feeding time. My husband calls it "the marine crawl"
