I dont know anything about fish diseases but that looks serious! I hope you can make it go away, I think the eye however is not going to recover.

Did his eye get damaged or did it just start growing out?

Looks like it just grew out... sorta like a fungus attached to the eye. He is a very old pleco. Still don't like an animal in distress, but cost is a factor too unfortunately.

It could be a tumour of some sort, we will have to wait for the people that have been in the business for a while to chime in.

Maybe in the mean time post you water parameters, waterchange regime and tank size, this might help in identifying the cause or the problem.

Is he under quarantine at the moment?

30 gal tank
50 gal filtration system
5 gal cleaning weekly

the only other fish in the tank is a catfish.

Okay well lets wait and see what the others say.

If you haven't done so already please post an introduction on the introduce yourself forum.

Not sure what's going on with that eye, but it does look bad

What kind of catfish is in there with him?

You really should be changing more water in the tank than that every week, many times fresh clean water does wonders for fish ailments

What is the PH of the tank? Do you have hard water (not the same as PH)? When using tetracycline, you have to make sure that you do not have a PH above 7.6 and/or hard water. It is essentially useless under these water conditions.
