Red tail/tiger shovel nose catfish

I have a red tail/tiger shovel nose catfish. I'm wanting to get some tetras, mollies, and other little fish I know he will eat them so if you want him just let me know he's still fairly small around 4 inches. 4345043451

I hope you are aware as to the eventual size of this species. Unless your tank is multiple hundred gallons in volume, which it does not appear to be, you should try to find a suitable home for the catfish real quick(see if the store will take it back, find an aquarist with a 150+gallon tank, etc). Then, you can stock your tank with more suitable small community fish.

I am aware he gets big!!!! I look into all my fish before I get them in not trying to be rude. I'm trying to get rid of him because I want smaller fish and I know with him being a carnivore he will eat the smaller fish.

There is another forum called Monster fish keepers, you can see if anyone would be interested there. Good luck, a LFS I go to has one of these in a huge indoor pond 50' by 30', definately not a small guy, beautiful though.

Yes they are beautiful fish!!! I just wish they was a catfish that didn't eat other fish lol!

Yes but I have a pictus and he's never ate or tired to eat a fish.

A pictus will take out small fish. They are predators as well. Neons tetra are just one example of a fish that will get eaten.

Yeah but I've had tetras in my tank with the pictus he's never tried to bother them

The behavior of each fish is unique and depends on its personality (bold, shy, etc) as well as environmental factors like food availability, stress etc. That being said, the generalization that any fish, "herbivorous" or not, will opportunistically predate smaller fish is still true. In any case, the shovelnose will definitely reach a stage where all small tetras are viewed as food, so it really would be best to rehome it.
