i have 2 male german rams in a 185 lt tank with 5 black neon tetras, 1 black ghost knife fish, 2 angels, 2 clown loach (adding more soon, and to be moved to a bigger tank shortly), the 2 male rams get on ok most of the time, the eldest follows the other peacefully and sometimes he colours right up and chases the other around the tank, the youngest has never coloured up and i assume to be submisive, he has stood up to the eldest a few times but never won the battle, would the eldest know its a male or is he flirting? i was thinking of moving the youngest to another tank, but the only room i have is with 2 male guppies?

As far as I have read the rams color with age and temp. plays a factor too.

What is the temp of the tank. How old is the younger of the two?

They sound young still. Just keep on keeping the wter chemistry stable, feeding a good diet, and keeping good watr quality and in a few months, they will be the most colorful fish you've ever seen. Maybe you can a post a pic?

Hi to all! I am planning to buy some rams for my 20 gal. community tank that have 8 neon tetras, 4 salt and pepper corydoras, 1 bandit corydora, 5 red eye tetras, 2 red tailed sharks, a male and female betta and a few guppies. I have been reading some articles about the ram but have mixed infos some say they ok for a community tank others say no. My aquarium is well planted , aerated (filter and bubble wand) and well lit with 2 coral life lamps. With the above population, how many rams can I buy and will they blend well with other fishes in the tank?
Your thoughts? Many thanks.

my main concern is that they are happy, the eldest is very colourful and is stunning (he coloured up quickly after i got him, approx a few weeks after i got him), the other has not, i am worried that he is getting harrassed by the eldest, which is why he hasnt coloured up? maybe, or acting submissive?

They both look pretty healthy. I don't think you have much to worry about.
Here is my male blue. His name is Baron. I have a female blue as well. Trying to get a good pic of her. I think both of yours are very pretty. nice pic

I finally got a pair of German Rams, and after a week before barely reading enough info about these beautiful fishes, the pair bred on a driftwood. At first I did not know that they spawned but after I noticed the female's tummy went back to normal after seeing her tummy bulge from eating tubifex worms and cichlid pellets, I knew from then that the paired spawned! I looked around the community tank and finally located the spot where they laid the eggs. I would say its between 150 to 200. I'll take some photos later tonight.
I went nuts trying to clear the tank. I finally got a makeshift tank by utilizing a big rubbermaid container box and filled it with aged water and dropped all my other community tank fishes (tetras, corys, a pair of red tail sharks, guppies, algae eaters) in it and they seem to be doing well for now. I aerated the makeshift tank with an airstone and heating it with a portable aquarium heater.
Now going back to my ram dilema. I have never bred nor raised rams in my life but there's always a first time. Now my community tank which is now bare except with the pair of rams, eggs, existing plants (amazon swords, red leafy plants, etc) and snails! Now these snails are not the huge ones but these are the tiny ones that grow to a max of 1/4" and have no way of ridding them now so all I have to do is have my aquarium lights on 24 hours a day because I noticed before that once I turn of the light during the day and come home at night, once I turn it back on I would see hundreds of snails all over the tank. But with the lights on , I could barely see 20 of them and currently the Ram pair are doing a good job at fending intruding snails away from their nest by nudging them aggressively until they hide inside their shells and fall off.
Since this is my first time breeding and raising rams, what will be the first food to give the frys? Also do I remove the pair once the eggs hatch?
Any advice will help. Thanks a lot in advance.

Here's the picture of my Ram guarding their eggs. The one seen here is the male while the female goes for a brief stroll.

Great job Blue Guppy. You will need to feed them infusoria.
GLadys45 your GBR's are some of the healthiest looking I've ever seen. What kind of flakes or pellets do you feed them everyday?

My pair of rams recently bred and have been guarding the eggs for 3 days (as seen in my posted pictures). I have totally cleared the tank of all fishes save for the plants and snails (unfortunately). The pair have been doing a good job of guarding the nest from the snails. I have also left my aquarium light on for 3 days now since they bred. I noticed that the snails come out in numbers when my light is off so as a precaution I left it on since my pair bred. But as of early this morning, I could not see any eggs nor any signs of the frys. What could have happened. The pair could not have been stressed since there are no fishes about. Any guess...anyone?
