I am setting up my first shrimp tank and came across a mineral stone for shrimp. Is this necessary? Sites claim it aids in breeding and molting and clarifies water. But paying $10 plus shipping for a rock is a bit much if it isn't needed. I have hard water kH 5, gH 11, think the water would have all of the minerals they need?

some people swear by them. I've had one with my crystals before and can't say it didn't work. But I think its mostly for trace elements

My shrimp do fine with plain 'ole free rocks I picked up

yeah, I was going to add some "river rocks/pebbles" to the tanks-hope that will work in addition to my already hard water..

It'll be just fine that way...

I second that, really, unless you are keeping some of the fancier types (not neos) its not needed. When you get into some of the crystals, pure lines, bolts etc then you need more exact conditions

So happy with the neos. They come in enough variety to keep me happy.
