Are you certain that it is a worm? My new Red Platy seemed to have long (1/4 inch) reddish-orange thing dangling from her anus for several hours. It has since dropped off and I suctioned it out, but it just looked like an off-colour poop, it did not appear to be alive, either while attached or after it fell off. I have been very worried about it and my other fish during this same time period seemed to produced shorter but similar things - some reddish and some black. They all seem to be fine today, but yesterday I dosed the tank with Melafix and Aquarisol and some salt. I am watching them all closely. All fish are eating and moving around normally and all water parameters seem to be good.

Was it moving? What kind of fish does he keep? I'm fairly certain it's poop. You don't tend to see it as much on small warm water fish, but my 6 inch comets used to lay some real doosers.

Easy enough to tell a worm from poop. Poop will fall apart and a worm will wiggle. LOL

so was there ever a consensus? Poop or worm? My platy has the same thing (long, thin, red but looks kind of solid) and I thought I saw something similar on a molly a couple of days ago...
