View Full Version : Ammonia Spike for Planted Substrates?

I am currently in the design phase of rescaping my planted 29g tank. I'm moving from white pool filter sand to a plant specialized substrate. Although I haven't come to a final decision on exactly which substrate I'll use, I've ran into the question as to whether these will cause an ammonia spike after introducing them to my tank?

My top three choices are:

ADA Aquasoil Amazonia

Seachem Flourite Dark

Fluval Stratum

They each seem to have their pluses an minus. I have a local dealer who sells ADA products for pretty reasonable prices (which is the only reason I can possible even consider ADA).

Usually ammonia wouldn't be an issue when starting a new tank...but I'm planning on doing this with fish who are already established. I'll move them to a holding tank while I rework the 29g. I could always try to keep them in the holding tank for longer, but it just makes me nervous.

In addition to the ammonia spike, in general, does anyone have experience with any of these three substrates who can share some words of wisdom, advice, approval or avoidance tips?
