Help, New To All This !!!

Hi, I have been given a 'Pearl 40' Aquarium (30 litres). I would like some advice on how to set-up the tank for the first time. The box contains - the tank, airator unit(no tube!), a filter, a small bag of gravel and a plastic tree! What other parts do I need ? and also what chemicals do I need, there seems to be so many !! I just wish to have a simple aquarium for my son to look at and enjoy. Any amount of help would be gratfully received. Thanks

do you have an idea on what sort of fish you want
it will have an effect on how your water should be set,
