It all depends on what you are looking for. Do you want a small point and shoot camera to be able to take anywhere? Do yout a larger ultra zoom camera that is still easy to carry around? Or do you want a DSLR camera to give you total control when it comes to your pictures and lenses?
Regardless, this is the best site on digital cameras ...

Only advice I can give you is if you are looking for a non DSLR, make sure the camera has a very, very low shutter lag rating, has many manual features such as exposure time, focus and ISO settings and remember that "digital zoom" is worthless, don't buy into it. All digital zoom does is crop your picture making the pixels bigger (although the object is bigger) and blurrier thus giving you a large decline of picture quality. Opitcal zoom is what you are looking for.
Agreed with A340 on the dpreview website. Incredibly detailed and informative reviews.
I use the Canon xti DSLR and really am still trying to learn how to use the vast options. For Christmas I am getting my wife the Canon 850IS. Yes, I love Canon. I also have an older (about 5 years old) Nikon Coolpix 5000 that is very nice but is comparatively slow to the newer models.
So far, I've had ...
2 x Olympus point and shoots
1 x Nikon point and shoot
1 x Minolta point and shoot
1 x Canon Digital Rebel DSLR
Currently I have a Sony Cybershot point and shoot (came free with my internet hook up) and a Canon Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
