firstly i was lucky to find a FREE aquarium with no leaks. it was very dirty but a few hours of elbow greased save em a ton of money! maybe teh dings in my car will even that out?

I don't use the same currency as most, so i am putting into USD for convenience.
Tank: $0
water pump: $13
Hoses for filter: $3
Plastic trays for bio filter: $6
Foam and filter media (incl lava rock): $7
lights and wires (4x 24" flouro): $34
gravel: $33
silicone for some placement: $3
plants: $9
rocks and decor: $0

so i got a 70 gal aquarium all setup for only $108! best deal i have ever gotten. well i think its a good deal!

here are some pics from 1 year ago when i set it up. i will take a couple more of present day, the plants are a little bigger...and the light hungry ones died cause they light doesn't penetrate far enough to the bottom...rather high aquarium.

some changed but basically the same. i took out a lot of that rock and the shells cause it was messing up the ph too much, all good now :)

wow that was fast. thanks guys! i really like it but don't have many in it. right now there are 2 angels, 4 cories, a flying fox (had 3 , 2 died) a single smaller pleco, 6 red nose tetras, 3 cherry tetras (i don't know the common names over there, these are asian common names...), 3 dwarf blue rainbow fish (my fav's), 5 danios and a couple odds and ends including 1 gourami....i know them and angels don;'t mix well, but they seem ok for the time being and i am not planning on getting any more angels once they die...i prefer smaller fish...and nicer fish!

here it is today, sorry for the dark pic, its night here.

Looks REALLY good! that driftwood is awesome, and i've never seen a tank like that before (the top has like a glass ledge, cool! lol)

thanks guys and gals! :) appreciate it! the tank is pretty nice, its built like a brick. it has a 6cm glass ledge around the inner top and a doubled up piece going through the center, where the filter sits. its thick glass, 12mm....so its pretty heavy on its own. we also get huge earthquakes here so its strong enough for them. we have had a number of 4-5 earth quakes and a couple 7's, it has held up :)

the java ferns were held on with string, but not anymore....in fact the wood used to be tied down to rocks under the gravel, and now it is sitting where it is with no strings. feels good to be free! the wood is from the forest, i don't trust wood from the ocean, polluted here. we has some VERY pretty plants, but the light at the bottom just wasn't good enough :( i want to get some stronger lights, but my wife wont let me go crazy on this hobby :(

any other DIY cheap skates on the boards? lol!

the best idea i can think of for a cheap strong light is a 150w+ metal halide fixture. some people refurbish them and sell them for cheap

thats what i was planning, but my wife doesn't like the idea of buying more lights when we already have some...and the higher electricity cost :( i am working on her....it took me a year to get her to accept my snakes and all the lizard lights....i am in the works of trying to get a new 90 gallon, proving difficult lol. with that i will buy MH for sure!

Thanks folks. I am Canadian, but i am living in Taiwan right now :) For the record, this country has unlimited free used tanks. many are broken or leak, but there are lots of good ones that just need a clean. maybe i am a cheap skate, but a free 70 gallon, or 90 gallon or whatever is worth the clean job! i could have gotten bigger, but it would not have fit inside our car :(

this is something i never saw in canada...:(

When I saw the first pics of your tank, I really was on the verge to get a screaming fit, but thank heaven I red on. It now looks so much better:thumb:

But you really but some dark backround into or on the back of your tank, those tiles really ruin the whole thing, and thats really a shame.

I am looking foreward to new pics lets say in 2 or 3 months:ezpi_wink1: then you should be owner of a nice jungle.

lol, come move to alberta, theres plenty of free tanks in edmonton.

how long ago did you move to taiwan? im so used to canada that i dont think i can ever leave

ganoderma

LOL! i never saw any free stuff where i was in BC, alberta is the place to be eh?

That last pic is right after i redid the log and plants. they needed thinning and they were crowding the pump. the log is on the back now (used to lay flat) for the exact reason you said, tiles are ugly. its actually much brighter than you might think, they are white tiles and there are 5 meter by 3 meter high sliding glass doors that make the room bright. that pic was at night though.

i want a rel background on it, but they were rather expensive (more than the pump....???) for a high aquarium...so we didn't get one...now the thing is to damn heavy to think about moving, so its as is. also we own a school and this is for the kids to learn english, s we put many lame things on the glass for them to learn with....i will spare this website our recent halloween ones LOL!

cocoa, i honestly never thought i would leave either, i LOVE canada. but when you meat a women (or a man) things change and priorities get bumped. but we are moving back to buy a house soon, the money is very good here though.
