i always wanted to try petting him but when i put my hand near the tank he just puts his nose up and stares, and i see a bite coming. now i know not to pet him. lol

i was curious about this,,i was excited being mine just started eating from my fingers,,but nomatter if i ever put my hands in,,he(or she) is never even slightly aggressive,,everytime i tell people i have a jack dempsey in the tank,,they sound surprised that the dempsey is still alive,,this fish seems tame as can be,,and im far from being a 'fish whisperer',,that jack dempsy hates me,,hides behind the oscar or the filter any chance he gets,,

Well, I think if you gave the jack dempsey like a rock cave to go in or some type of hiding place, he will eventually feel more safer. thats what ive been told and i put a hiding spot for my oscar and he usually goes in it at night or right next to it outside of it. Whenever the light is on, and he sees me walk by he'll stop whatever hes doing and go right to the top and beg for food lol.

Just give him alittle time. He/she will get used to you and all of a sudden one day he will be jumping up and grabbing his food out of your hand...that is what mine did anyway. It is exciting when they do that.

my Oscar is blind, so I have to hold the food in the tank until he comes up to eat it. I get bit every time. He's about 11" big. It dont hurt, stop whining

LOL, my wife feeds Leroy right on the surface of the water, she said the other night, this is how you feed him, well I will stick to feeding him 4inches above the surface, even at that he has come close to my fingers.
