Ok I was looking at florida native fish and I discovered that there are bluefin killis in the general area I live in but I don't know which exact rivers and lakes there in can anyone help me?

I'm not sure where they would be, but do be careful about harvesting wild fish in Florida. The feds are very touchy about certain species. Make sure that that one is ok to catch before going out and doing so. You might want to give a better idea of where in Florida you are located. There is a LOT of water there so telling you which rivers and lakes can be exhaustive.

Actually Florida is really lienent - just need a fishing license.

You can find them in a lot of the off shoots of the rivers in the backwater. you need a sain net and a shotgun just in case a gator gets you.

I just know there are a few fish that are protected and it never hurts to make sure the one you want is not one of those fish. I know certain types of small live bearers are protected.

Ok my dad has a fishing liscens and I'm under 18 so as long as I'm with him I don't need one. Oh I know about gators trust me I use to live in the north florida swamps we had gators, poisonus snakes, poisonus spiders everything I even had a blaack widow crawl up my arm when I was four and last year when I was raking we had bid water oak trees and a black widow jumped on my neck but now I live in a tiny neiborhood in the tampa bay area.

You are around a lot of good collecting areas. You should be able to google them. Are you guys part of the local club? They would most likely join you and help out in the collecting.

I've only shot a pp gun but when we move were going to get land son definatly going to be shooting and hunting. My grandpa live on our old farm in the sticks (sorry listening to the song kick it in the sticks had to say it) but he has a double barrel that he shot once with both bullets at a coyotye got knocked back 10 feet only uses one bullet now.

Hu I've never seen that happen with my granpas and my moms shotsguns but then again they never let my shhoot them even though I'm a shart shooter with a moded nerf gun and a pp gun. Oh when I lived in the sticks I tryed to hunt squirrels at first I would just hide in my little dirt bunker (had my own hole/safe thing for my weapons) and would run at them with my homemade spears never worked but for my birthday I got a tent, sleeping bag, first aid kit, and a blowgun good thing for the first aid I was cutting a limb off a tree to make a spear and was using my multi tool saw and when I finally cut through it it whipped up and send my tool flying I landed on my face and my right poiter finger was pretty messed up I had a huge blood blister and it was bleeding under the fingernail plus on my joint closest to my nail you could see the bone it took about three months to fully heal but it scared.

With your luck just go find some water. I'm sure a mad killifish will come after you. Just hold your net up and pray it doesn't break through. lol

All kidding aside I couldn't tell you which body of water. I'm from the East coast and know little about your neck of the woods. If I was you, just talk your dad into going exploring. Tell him it's for educational purposes, that'll score you some points.

Can't say as I have. You might look into cast netting as well. It's rather fun and a good skill to have.

Compass
04-23-2014, 05:16 PM
I would also recommend you find a good field guide for fish in Florida. That way when you go fishing you'll be able to identify what you get. Should be a lot of fun. Even if you don't find your killifish you might come away with something just as cool. Mosquito fish come to mind.

aquariumlover10
04-23-2014, 05:30 PM
Oh my gosh you just reminded me of the last time I went saltwater fishing with my dad ok so we had a cast net cooler and our rods and tackle boxs so we first went up and down the beach to see the best spot to fish we saw a dead stingray and someone that caught a black tip and was going to eat it ok so when I got over seeing a guy stab a shark and thrown it on some rocks to bleed out we tryed cast neting you know what we got 5! needlefish with another school of them behind us about 50 feet from shore knee deep in water runing from the othe needles and the "dead" stingray was gone so I was like hey you want to leave now so we didn't and when we did leave we got back home at 8:00 pm and we didn't have time to rinse everything out so there was some sand in the cooler(we didn't have any ice or fish in it) so in the morning I when to rinse it out and there was a crab in there haha he died. Oh and I actually caught some mosquitos from the last time I went fw fishing well I have some babies from the ones I caught and some of them I got from my lfs 13 for 3.99 11 mosquitos and 2 endlers good deal.

Slaphppy7

Yup my mom I guess had it since she was a teenager and didn't know it until she got bit by another tick in virginia that had lyme and i guess my dad got bit and my sister got bit by a tick in virginia.

Oh, my...I hope they are ok....your mom has lived with lyme disease since she was a teenager?

I need to read up on this disease, I thought it was very serious and potentially fatal...maybe I'm wrong

Ya there are treating it slowly but when she was a teenager she didn't know she had it she actually found out this january I think but me and my younger brother and sister were born with it because my mom had it but us three were on such strong antibiotics when we were younger that it killed it and I actually had it wrong antibiotics only work in the early stages oh if you want to know why I was on antibiotics it is because I had strep throat 15 times in 2 years so I had my tonsils and adnouds taken out but I still got it 2 times after surgery.

Thanks I went to the beach today and caught 10 hermit crabs 1 blue crab like the ones you eat and 7 little sheepshead plus I saw about ten dolphins and when I move we are going to be really close to the beach and we are going to open a bait shop(probably).

aquariumlover10
04-27-2014, 11:43 AM
Ok the fish I caught were actually atlantic croakers

mommy1
04-27-2014, 12:09 PM
Sheepsheads are pretty fish, but their teeth are scary. I think I would rather catch the croakers. Here is a bit of information on them if you are interested.

Sheepshead

http://myfwc.com/fishing/saltwater/recreational/sheepshead/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archosargus_probatocephalus

Atlantic Croaker

http://myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/profiles/fish/saltwater/drums/atlantic-croaker/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_croaker

I bet it was neat to see the dolphins. When my family and I take a drive to the beach we always look for dolphins when we are on the ferry to Padre Island. They often swim alongside the ferry.

aquariumlover10

Slaphppy7
04-28-2014, 08:21 PM
Wow, that will be alot of shrimplets...the crawdad doesn't try to eat the ghost shrimp?

aquariumlover10
04-28-2014, 08:28 PM
No not really but she's slow so she can't really catch them but she is hiding in a corner behind some hornwort. Ok I put the newly preg shrimp in the breeder box with the other one and I put a piece of algae wafer and I had to tear it in two because they were fighting over it.

Slaphppy7
04-28-2014, 08:33 PM

Ok I was wanting to get another breeder box because my pregnant ghosts are getting a little territorial and I was eyeballing the tom baby nursery breeder box thing anyway here's a link (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=14698) so should I order this or get another regular 3 way breeder box?

KevinVA
04-29-2014, 01:42 AM

aquariumlover10
04-29-2014, 01:55 AM

04-29-2014, 02:15 AM
Ok so I just saw what looks like part of a molted shell of a ghost shrimp its the top part of a tail and there's no meat or anything but I saw it near where my cray was hiding do you think its just a cwincidet or the cray ate one?
I am leaving this ^ to show how stupid auto correct can be.

KevinVA
04-29-2014, 02:45 PM
Congrats, bud! Looks like you're doing things very carefully. It's possible the crayfish ate that one shrimp, since they're at their weakest and most vulnerable when molting - they can't really escape. Or, it could just be a molt and that's that.

aquariumlover10
04-29-2014, 06:20 PM
Ok thanks should I get another breeder box?

KevinVA
04-29-2014, 07:13 PM
If you're only keeping shrimp & crayfish in the tank, I don't see why you'd need one at all. They do fine if left to their own devices. So no, I wouldn't recommend another breeding box.

aquariumlover10
04-29-2014, 07:19 PM
If you look at my thread rcs for my tank? It will show mybequipment and stock.

Slaphppy7
04-29-2014, 07:32 PM
Yeah, as long as you have plenty of hiding places, the shrimp and babies will be ok

KevinVA
04-29-2014, 07:35 PM
If it's the same stocking as your profile, then you have a Betta, several mosquitofish, 2 otos, an upsidedown catfish, a zebra danio and a crayfish? Now you've added Ghost shrimp. Is that correct?

If so, your biggest concern should be the Betta and upside down catfish. The other fish will likely leave the shrimp alone. So, if you're looking to grow out your shrimp, then a breeder box is probably your best bet. The Betta, however, will be able to eat adult ghost shrimp, should he decide he wants a variety in live foods. Not sure how aggressive your catfish will be, though.

But yes, a well planted tank with plenty of hiding places will likely provide a safe enough environment for your shrimp.

aquariumlover10
04-29-2014, 07:49 PM
Ok my betta is 3.5 years old and has had swim bladder disease, ick, and something that makes him look like he has wart thing which is back by the way and my cat hide under my filter output all day and comes out at night so I can't really tell what she does.

Slaphppy7

KevinVA
04-29-2014, 08:13 PM
3.5yrs is pretty good. Mine passed away somewhat recently after about 2yrs. He had similar problems. This last battle with an illness got the better of him and I couldn't cure him of whatever it was. Bettas in a cup just can't be expected to live out a full and healthy life, unfortunately. ;/

aquariumlover10
04-30-2014, 01:18 AM
Oh my god I just remebered something the female ghost shrimp molt then put off a hormone that atracts males and then she puts the eggs on her swimmerets, the females only have eggs after molting so the tail thing was a molted shell.

aquariumlover10

Ok but about the shrimp stuff in the last two post.

KevinVA
04-30-2014, 08:44 PM
I'll tell you what... Ghost Shrimp do not have a problem with reproduction. I'm fairly certain they're one of the fastest reproducing shrimp in the history of shrimp.

The problem you're going to have is feeding the babies in their larval form. If your tank is mature and established, you might be able to sustain them with infusoria. Otherwise, you may have to feed them strained egg yolk or powdered fry food, etc.

There have been a lot of reportings of berried shrimp, but many unsuccessful breeders. If not eaten by fish, etc, the potential to starve to death is pretty high.

04-30-2014, 08:46 PM

Why dried dead grass? Cut, live grass + an algae tab should do the trick. It'll probably take at least a week or so to grow.

That being said, if you have an established tank with live plants, you probably already have infusoria. I have grown fry without any kind of fry food. They've just eaten the infusoria within the tank. I still see my older fry (about 7+ months old now) picking on plants to eat whatever goodies they can find.

You can put it out on the ground if you need to. You won't need a green house, just natural sunlight would be plenty.

Ok but I want some for the baby shrimp they cant move very well until like a week old so I want a back up plan, should I use grass, potatos, or lettuce or a mix of them or what?

Why not experiment with each? Plastic bottles are cheap. Put some potato in one, some lettuce in another and grass in the third.

Actually, I just read you shouldn't put it in direct sunlight. Apparently a greenhouse or direct sunlight will be too much light. On an indoor window sill would probably be the best. Or maybe in an area of the yard that doesn't get direct sunlight for the majority of the day, but isn't shaded.

Ok I may try them outside my window on the ground but does it need a lid? And I wanted to start a small green water culture how should I do this and I may be able to use some glass jars.

Steps to succeeding w/ insufuria cultures:

1. Get a clear bottle/jar (plastic or glass w/ as big an opening as you can get for maximum oxygen exchange)
2. Fill it with tank water (works better then dechlorinated tap water)
3. Add a leaf of lettuce (or other material that will decay in the water to start a bacteria culture - insufuria eats bacteria)
4. Cover with fish net material or muslin cloth (optional)
5. Place bottle/jar in a well-lit area, but not in direct sunlight
6. The water will get cloudy (due to the bacterial bloom). Once it clears or turns pinkish, you will have a well-fed culture of insufuria
7. Use a syringe or turkey baster to remove some of the liquid toward the top of the bottle/jar and add a couple of drops to your tank (not the whole thing)

Steps to succeeding with green water cultures:
1. Get a clear bottle/jar (plastic or glass w/ as big an opening as you can get for maximum oxygen exchange)
2. Fill it with tank water
3. Place bottle/jar in a well-lit area (can be direct sunlight)

OR

1. Get a clear bottle w/ a cover
2. Pick some fresh plant leaves
3. Blend the leaves for about 1min with dechlorinated tap or tank water
4. Strain and pour the blend into the bottle and reapply the cover (no leaves)
5. Place capped bottle w/ blend in a well-lit area for 24hrs for a phytoplankton bloom
6. Get another clear bottle/jar (bigger than the one you have - maybe a clear bucket)
7. Fill the new container with dechlorinated tap water or tank water
8. Pour your blend into the new container and let it sit under a well-lit area (direct sunlight preferred)
9. In a few days your culture (the phytoplankton) will grow

Ta-da!!!

I agree, I always enjoy coming here and reading "what he's doing now", I bet there's not to many video games in his house.

I wouldn't doubt it.

Ok I started my infusoria culture with tank water a small lettuce leaf and a little bit of an algae wafer.

Should I put some hornwort in the jar to jump start the infusoria

Ok I may put some in tomorrow, ok my friend that lives next down is almost 8 and he use to have a betta but it died and his pasrents say he's to young to have fish and not responsible enough but he keeps a frog in captivity that we found outside for more than 2 weeks and he had to let it go because every one was staying inside while they were sick so we couldn't feed it or put water in its tank but we found the same frog again today so he's going to keep it but he's afraid he'll get in trouble for asking if he can keep fish again but the reason his bettas always died is because he didn't know he needed declorinator drops so what should I do.
