A good start would be by putting this thread under the right forum, such as General Aquarium or Beginner Aquarium .... :ezpi_wink1:

Other than that, I'd suggest a 150w submersible heater (Visatherm Stealths are great) an AquaClear AC70 or AC110 HOB (hang on back) filter and for lighting, a nice glass top with a Coralife Aqualight light strip.

As far as an actual tank set up, what is your liking? Plants, rocks? What kind of fish would you like to keep?

Is this your first tank, or have you had tanks before?

If this is your first tank, I suggest starting slow until you are more confident in what your doing. You can have a nice community tank that will require probably no more than the lights and heater you already have. Good filtration, as stated above, is necessary and you don't mention what filteration comes with it. I agree also with the AC 70-100.

Above all else, learn about cycling so the fish you buy will not be killed due to toxins. If your friend recently had fish, you may get some of his gravel and the filter media he's used. If he hasn't used it for awhile, you may as well start over with new stuff as the bacteria he would have had is already dead.

Make sure your fish are compatible with others you get (compatiblity charts are here), don't get fish that grow into giants and don't fill that tank with 30 species of different fish. Stick with larger amounts of fish of the same species as many are schooling fish and like company of their own.

Always use dechlorinator and never use soap to clean anything.

Figure out the specs on what you are getting from him. Often, you can take your heater and such to a shop and find one that matches it on the wall. That way you know for certain what you have. Once you know that, educate your self on cycling the tank, critter selection and so forth, figure out what you want and then go from there. Do the research and plan well though or you may be disappointed to find that you ended up with multiple spieces that prefer different water conditions or something.

A340, I'm confused, he's asking for hints about how to set up his tank. Why is this the wrong forum for this question?

As the others have said....research. The key is research and lots of it. Check out the ebook here, its pretty awesome. Learn about cycling, compatibility, tank maintenance. Also figure out what you want to do with the tank (ie planted, small community fish, etc).

I've got a 29 gallon and I have it a little over half planted. I'm running an AC70 HOB and have a light bioload of 6 rasboras (I was going to get 12, but decided to keep it at 6. I feel it looks more peaceful), 2 bronze corydoras, and three shrimp. Hope this helps.

if this is your first tank read the free ebook. I can not reccomend this enough. It contains all the info you need to start a sucessful aquarium.
