i have a 30 gallon tank. right now im just trying to get the tempature stable. when i turn off the heater the tempature drops to 70 and when its on {even the lowest setting] it gos up to the mid 80s. the heater is 150 watts is this too powerfull for my sized aquarium?

Actually, 150 is just the right size for a 30 gallon.

Maybe you have a faulty heater?

I'd get a new one. Look for Visa-therm stealth heaters. I've heard they are very reliable.

Is your thermometer one that hangs in the tank, or sticks on the outside?

for a 30 gallon i would run with two 75 watt submersibles. you will get the best heat distribution that way. put one heater on the left side and one on the right side of the tank down at the substrate line. sounds to me like your heater may be faulty as stated by drum.

Agreed that it sounds like a faulty heater. Get rid of it immediately. The Visitherm Stealth heaters are largely regarded as the best, have a lifetime warranty, and are rock solid stable.

i completely agree with gm72 on this too. visitherm stealths are the best. i run them myself as well

To sound like a broken record....

VisiTherm Stealth all the way. Either split you heaters up as has been mentioned or place the one directly in whatever current you have in order to distribute the heat as evenly as possible.

Again, remove your current heater as soon as possible so you do not cook your fish.

i tried to place my heater horizontal in my tank, im going to see if this some how makes a difference.
