One of my silver dollars has developed a brown spot about the size of the pupil of it's eye on both sides of it's body directly behind the gills. Any idea what this is? Thanks.

Probably natural coloration coming out if it is symmetrical. Do you have spotted silver dollars?

Two have spots. Two don't. The one with the brown spots is spotted.

But are they the species spotted silver dollar? I don't remember the scientific name, but if you search for spotted silver dollars on fishbase.org and many other places they will pop up. The body shape is different, not as round, and they can develop more coloration than other species. There should be a couple pictures of mine on my PhotoBucket page.

Thanks. I did not know that. How large do the spotted ones get?

If yours are spotted they will max out at about 5" or so, smaller than other species.
