View Full Version : Fry staying on bottom then die

I'm new to raising Angels but not to water quality or raising tropical fish and koi.

My Angel pair have had 5 spawns in the last couple of months. They ate the first 2. The 3rd & 4th hatched and disappeared just before free swimming.

This last hatch they finally got right! The fry became free swimming and looked great. The next morning most were gone and/or dead on the bottom. The few that are left are staying on the bottom of the tank, not swimming at all.

I had a new HOB filter that broke about the time the eggs were laid so I had to start with a new filter. I tested the water and the Nitrites were off the chart so I'm thinking this is the problem. I immediately added a binder and did a small water change. This happened the day the fry began swimming.

The parents look fine although I know they are hardier than the fry.

On the 4th spawn, I also did a water change the night before I found them gone in the morning. I don't know if the parents are eating them to protect them or if they are too fragile for water changes. Water is well, no chlorine, and same temp.

I feel bad for asking the obvious but you didn't transfer the media from the old filter to the new one?

Do you have anything for the fry to eat? Microworms etc?

I know they don't need much right away, most of the time I've heard they stay on the bottom for a few days before moving much

No, I didn't. My fault. I was aggravated with the new filter not working, I didn't think about. I added a cup of gravel from my old aquarium.

Yes, I'm hatching baby brine for them.

By the time they spawn again in 2-3 weeks, the tank should be fully cycled. I'm going to give them one more try.

I only have a couple of babies left so I doubt they're going to make it.

I'd love to see pics and details of your planted tank. I'm getting ready to change my 75 over. I'm ordering the light and filter this weekend.
