Ok this is pretty wierd . Two of my females are acting very wierd since i bought them .Both have very vibrant colors .I fed them well over a month . No signs of eggs yet . But i can see clearly their eggtube . One of them builds huge bubblenests . Both females flare at each other and at the males and they cannot be kept together cuz they rip each other off .Im posting pics for your conveniences. I think the bluish black in second pic is a plakat . Notice their ventral fins . In first two pics you can see the females or males????? In the third , u can see them flaring at each other . Look at my poor pinkish betta in the fourth pic who i tried to breed with them before he got ripped apart.I m just confused about their sex??? Oh ya , and another thing my new steel blue dt, seems to hav some sort of illness. I cannot notice any problems but he doesnt build any bubblenests . I just want to breed him by any possible means.!! You guys can see him in the fifth pic.

First Pic is definately a female - the second pic looks male to me - a male plakat.

You can best keep the females in one tank and the males in a tank each - feed the males well and pamper them - once they have built an impressive bubble nest (floating plants help a lot) pick a female full of eggs (you can usually see this as they have a bigger bulge at the front) and place her with the male.

If her stripes turn vertical she is 'in the mood' and will try to mate - it is normal that there is some fin ripping so make sure you have meds at hand to help the recovery - I always used Almond leaves in my betta tanks.

If her stripes turn horizontal and remain horizontal for a while she is stressed and will not mate - take her out and try a different female.

My male betta always had his fave lady and always rejected the others I offered.

Good luck xxx

females fight just as hard as males so be careful. if they're not fighting now i can assure you they will soon. even in a 55gal 2 males and 2 females will fight. that was another hard learned lesson as i lost a good looking male and almost a female. the females were lip-locked when i caught them fighting and it took a few minutes to separate them and get one out because they kept going for each other.

Never had a betta but the males have the long flowing fins and generally more colorful. Females are pretty too but with shorter fins.

You also have plakat males who's fins are just as short as the females and it can be quite hard to tell the sex... the ventral fins in a male are longer in the plakats

This for example is a male betta plakat:

I often get a load of betta females in and always end up with a few male plakats that I have to fish out ;) ;)

females also have a very obvious white "spot" (too lazy to look up actual terminology) sticking out ever so slightly on the underside.

The second pic is a male - the dark blue one... thumbs2: thumbs2:

female betta's will also fight to find out who is the alpha female and although females can be kept together they need an aqua that is at least 80cm in length to cut down on the squabbles.

it is advisable not to keep males and females together and the males each in their own tanks - the females in a bigger tank all together

The Red is the more dominant color so although they would be slightly mixed they would mainly be red
