The Rhizome...

Hi guys,

I recently acquired a selection of Amazon Swords and Java Fern and I'm really wondering what the rhizome is and what it does.

My main question however, is how do I propagate these plants? I've read something about rhizome splitting but I'm not really sure what is meant by this.

I have just a little experience with rhizome plants, so this is mostly from what I've read and not personal experience.

The rhizome is the horizontal part of the root. The rhizome should not be buried in the substrate. I'm not entirely sure what it does. I think you can split a rhizome by cutting it with something like a razor blade and both halves of the rhizome can grow leaves.
