if it is a crab, i would try to get it out ASAP. If it is a crab and you do get it out, get rid of it if it has hairy legs. Hairy legged crabs are horrible. I had one eat a mandarin once

i dont think its actually a crab. its a claw thats attached to the LR and thats it, nothing else.

it looks well and firmly place, but is it possible that my coral banded shrimp molted and magically the claw from the molt perfectly landed there?

My guess would be a barnicle, though I am only use to the marine barnicles in alaska, not sure about the warmer pacific.

Hard to say....it could be a tunicate or a coral....can you get a better pic?

Poke the little bugger and see what it does haha. Could be a moulted shell sitting there, or a bit of macroalgae that happens to have branched like that??...or maybe your LR is sprouting CLAWS!

its still there, and being hairy. it doesnt move, and is attatched to the LR.

lol, it would be funny if my LR chunk was a alien asteroid and the claw is part of a alien

It looks like a crab's pincher. As said before, it's a bad crab.

If it is a crab and you manage to catch it you could always keep it in a little critter keeper within one of your tanks! Even something like a betta barracks would work. Or a sump if you have one. Crabs can be quite interesting on their own...
If you decide to kill it, give the pieces to the dottyback, I'm sure he would appreciate it!

the dottyback would LOVE to eat it im sure! hes not gonna get it though. lol

i want to make my 27g long a sump for the 55g, but theres no possible room to make the sump fit unless i move the 55g, something i dont want to do.

i however want a hang on refugium, and he could go in there. dave66 gave me this link [Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

well, the claw is still in the same place, can retreat, and i have never seen more than the single claw. what could it be? its really puzzling

i'll have to go stealth, whenever the tang floats by the claw retreats, but i think i can try

use a pair of tweezers and you can hold onto it......

i almost got him.

he has alot of hairs on the claw, so i think when something moves by the current sways his hairs and he retreats

hairy = BAD. If/when you catch him. Move him into isolation. I hate it when people kills hitchhikers from their tank. it is not their fault that they're in your tank.

if i can ever catch him, hes going into my refugium

You guys with saltwater tanks sure get some weird stuff. Hairy claws, humgunous worms, etc. Where does this stuff come from? Does it live within the rock? I can see me with a saltwater tank! I'd be afraid of it. :)

all comes in on LR or wild corals attached to LR
